A Estrada Could Join Cider Cities as Galicia’s Representative of Cider Culture
The 13th A Estrada Cider Fair provided the setting this weekend for the first contacts between the Municipality of A Estrada and the representatives of the international Cider Cities project, an initiative that seeks to promote and connect the leading cider-producing cities and regions of Europe and other countries with a deep-rooted tradition linked to apples and cider.
The meeting took place during Galicia’s annual cider event and was attended by the Mayor of A Estrada, Gonzalo Louzao, the event organizers, the promoters of the project, and the Regional Minister for Rural Affairs of the Government of Galicia, María José Gómez. During the gathering, participants discussed the possibility of A Estrada becoming Galicia’s representative within the Cider Cities network, a proposal that was received with interest by all parties involved.
Following this initial meeting, a new working session has been scheduled for the coming weeks with the aim of defining the terms of A Estrada’s incorporation and exploring potential areas of collaboration between the municipality and this international project.
A Estrada’s candidacy is supported by the leading role the town has played in promoting cider culture in Galicia. For many years, the municipality has hosted the Feira da Sidra, widely regarded as Galicia’s most important celebration dedicated to cider.
The importance of A Estrada within the sector cannot be understood without considering the significance of cider apple production in Galicia. The autonomous community is the largest producer of apples for cider-making in Spain.
In recent years, the Feira da Sidra has established itself as a showcase for Galicia’s growing interest in cider, bringing together producers from different regions, consumers, and professionals connected to cider culture. This year’s edition once again demonstrated this dynamism, attracting a large number of visitors.
The possible incorporation of A Estrada into Cider Cities would represent an important step forward in the international promotion of Galician cider, facilitating the creation of links with other cider-producing territories and encouraging the exchange of experiences related to cultural heritage, tourism, and cider-based economic development.
The next meeting between the parties will help define a proposal that could make A Estrada the voice of Galicia within an international network designed to strengthen the visibility of the world’s diverse cider cultures.
