Just over a decade ago, German cider makers came up with the idea of celebrating a World Cider Day / International Cider Day. They proposed June 3 as the date, since the cider season begins in Germany on that day. The celebration was first held in 2013 in Hesse, Germany.
It is an arbitrary date, but it has gradually gained acceptance, because there is a genuine need to dedicate a day to cider in order to highlight its international character and to promote its culture and consumption.
In the case of Asturias, although the cider season traditionally begins around Saint Joseph’s Day or during Holy Week, with variations depending on whether one is closer to the coast or inland, June 3 has gradually come to be accepted as International Cider Day. As a result, Asturias today stands out as one of the regions most committed to promoting and supporting this festive and advocacy-oriented celebration.
