The events marking 3 June will include more than twenty cultural, educational and gastronomic activities, with programmes taking place in different councils across Asturies and the participation of the hospitality sector through the 5th Gastronomic Days promoted by OTEA in Uviéu.
LA SIDRA.- Asturian cider culture will once again celebrate World Cider Day on 3 June, a date that has gained particular significance since Asturian Cider Culture was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The programme includes more than twenty activities across different parts of Asturies, featuring cultural, educational, musical and gastronomic initiatives aimed at highlighting all the elements that make up this living heritage.
The programme offers exhibitions, educational gatherings, screenings, workshops and musical performances designed to showcase the different aspects of cider heritage. Among the announced activities is “Twelve Ways of Singing About Cider”, organised by the Ramón Pérez de Ayala Public Library, which presents songs and traditional tunes dedicated to cider through a digital audio collection accessible via QR codes.
Specific activities will also take place at several cultural venues. The Asturian Pre-Romanesque Centre will host a cider-based cosmetics workshop, while LABoral Centre for Art and Industrial Creation will organise an artistic experimentation laboratory inspired by the colours of cider.
Nava will once again occupy a central role in the day’s events with a symbolic cider pouring ceremony scheduled for noon on 3 June in front of the Museum of Cider of Asturies. The event is supported by the Asturian Federation of Councils (FACC), the Cider Foundation and the Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin Sidra de Asturies.
The hospitality sector will also join the initiative. OTEA and the City Council of Uviéu are promoting the 5th World Cider Day Gastronomic Days, taking place from 1 to 7 June. More than thirty establishments in the capital will offer dishes, menus and tapas in which cider plays a leading role, combining traditional recipes with contemporary culinary proposals.
The week will conclude with one of the most popular events in the Asturian cider calendar: the 26th Preba de la Sidra de Gascona, scheduled for Sunday 7 June. The programme includes gastronomic events, an artisan cider tasting, the Official Cider Pourers Competition, musical performances, pipe bands and the traditional public tasting of the season’s first ciders.
The main institutional event will be held at the Paraninfo of LABoral, featuring a round table dedicated to cider culture with the participation of researchers, specialists and representatives of the sector. The event forms part of the initiatives promoted by the Government of Asturies to strengthen the national and international projection of a heritage recognised by UNESCO for its cultural, social and identity value.
The commemoration of World Cider Day has thus become a key date for celebrating not only the drink itself, but also the cider houses, apple orchards, cider pouring tradition, oral heritage and social spaces that form part of one of the most distinctive features of Asturies.
