‘Harvest Experience’ of Asturies Cider

The PDO Sidra d’Asturies offered the media the presentation of the apple harvest campaign

One more year, the Asturies Cider PDO Regulatory Council celebrated its traditional ‘Harvest Experience’. A dozen journalists from various media outlets -including LA SIDRA magazine, of course-, both generalists and specialists in gastronomy, were able to enjoy a guided activity whose objective was to live a real experience of the the Apple. A conference organized to delve into the knowledge of the product and its roots, as well as in the agricultural and industrial sector of which the Asturies Protected Designation of Origin is a part.

In this edition, the chosen location was the LLédo CB plantation, in Nava. Its owners, José María and Nacho Calledo, guided all the attending journalists through a vertically based orchard that exceeds more than 10,000 square meters, and which annually produces more than 180 tons of apples, divided into six varieties. Father and son explained how the varieties are harvested in semi-dwarf plantations, the particularities of each campaign, the times of harvest according to the ripeness of the apples, their transfer to the cider mill and the controls that the Regulatory Council of the PDO Cider from Asturias.

The ‘Harvest Experience’ continued at Arbesú Cider Mill (Santa Marina) with the already traditional espicha among the attendees. Asturies Cider was not lacking accompanied by other local products, understanding the affable nature of this type of event, which endorses one of the most important aspects of the image of our community: quality gastronomy rooted in the origin and with the good atmosphere of the warmth of the Asturians.
