June 3 once again became a significant date yesterday for the cider sector and for thousands of enthusiasts of Asturias’ most emblematic drink. World Cider Day, celebrated annually on this date, once again served to highlight the cultural, social and economic importance of cider both in Asturias and in other cider-producing regions around the world.
This year’s edition held special significance in Asturias, which is marking its second World Cider Day since Asturian Cider Culture was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024. This recognition elevated the culture surrounding cider to a heritage of universal value and provided new momentum for promotion and outreach initiatives.
Across Asturias, a wide-ranging programme of cultural, educational and gastronomic activities was organised. The regional government supported more than twenty events in different municipalities, including Uviéu, Xixón, Nava, Siero, Colunga, Ribadesella and Teberga, as well as a promotional event in Madrid aimed at showcasing Asturian cider culture beyond the region.
One of the most visible celebrations took place in Uviéu, where a simultaneous public cider-pouring event was held in Cathedral Square. According to regional broadcaster RTPA, 400 glasses and bottles of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Sidra de Asturias were distributed during the open-air event. During the celebration, Asturian President Adrián Barbón highlighted cider culture as one of the defining elements of Asturias’ identity.
